Barrio Centro
The ancient center if Santiago de Chile is a classic in students lodging, specially for its low prices and its proximity to the univeristies.
Many apartments are antique and lately there was more consutruction of modern buildings that offer more comfort.
Planned in colonial Hispanic style, it was build in unifromed blocks, Un block to the west, one of the buildings shelters the Precolombian Art Museum, a colection of native latinamaerican history and culture. Between Morande and Teatinos street you can find "La Moneda" (The coin), a palace were national currency was minted and that from 1846 onward was the residence of Chile's president. During the military goverment on 1973, the building was bombed by the Air Force and President Allende commited suicide.
