Economic activity is linked with industry (production of wine, food and other drinks) and the extraction and refining of oil. It is also a major tourist center and the university.

There are many outdoor bars, located mainly in the Pedestrian Sarmiento, Columbus Avenue, Avenida San Martin and Avenida Aristides Villanueva, and the sidewalks are broad, well-preserved, clean and invite walking.
